Nagoya International Junior and Senior High School is committed to the achievement of academic excellence and is characterized and enriched by its English for International Understanding program. The school seeks to promote humanistic values in an interactive, bilingual environment and has recruited ten full-time native English teachers from all over the English-speaking world to teach students in small classes that emphasize oral communication skills in English. It also encourages students to develop a “frontier spirit”, a spirit characterized by independent, critical and creative thinking and by intellectual courage and thoroughness. Finally, the school prepares its students to be compassionate “citizens of the world” who are respectful of differences and are committed both to making a positive contribution to the world and to leading a fulfilled life.
The school offers students three distinct courses of study—a six-year integrated junior and senior high school program, an International Studies senior high school program, and an Advanced General Studies senior high school program. Students in all three programs study English more hours per week than at ordinary schools and have the chance to travel abroad at least once during their tenure here. In addition, the school offers special after-school programs for TOEIC, TOEFL and SAT preparation, conducts a United Nations General Assembly debate simulation in English and has developed student exchange agreements with schools in five countries.
Almost all graduates of Nagoya International Junior and Senior High School proceed to higher education, many at local private universities and at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business, with which this school is affiliated. The school has also placed graduates in Keio, Sophia, Ritsumeikan, Doshisha and a number of prestigious national universities. An increasing number of students win admission to overseas universities.
