School Outline

NUCB International Junior and Senior High School is committed to the achievement of academic excellence and is characterized and enriched by its English for International Understanding program. The school seeks to promote humanistic values in an interactive, bilingual environment and has recruited ten Native English instructors from all over the English-speaking world to teach students in small classes that emphasize oral communication skills in English. Students are also encouraged to develop a “frontier spirit”, a spirit characterized by independent, critical and creative thinking, and by intellectual courage and thoroughness. Finally, the school prepares its students to be compassionate “citizens of the world” who are respectful of differences and are committed both to making a positive contribution to the world and to leading a fulfilled life.

The school offers students three distinct courses of study—a six-year Integrated junior and senior high school program, an International Studies senior high school program, and a General Studies senior high school program. Students in all three programs study English more hours per week than at ordinary schools and have the chance to travel abroad at least once during their time at NUCB International Junior and Senior High School. In addition, the school offers special after-school programs for TOEIC preparation, conducts a United Nations General Assembly debate simulation in English and has developed student exchange agreements with schools in seven countries.

In addition to the integrated junior and senior high school program, the International Studies Program, and the General Studies program, NUCB International Junior and Senior High School is an official International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme(IBDP) authorized world school. The IBDP is a rigorous and rewarding course of study which aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

NIHS serves a critical role in the region as the only secondary school that is both an Article 1 MEXT accredited school as well as an IB World School. Our curriculum is far more rigorous than public schools and places a strong emphasis on English based instruction by highly qualified teachers. While Nagoya has a vibrant, diverse community of Japanese returnees and international families, access to international education is limited. Currently, NIHS is a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme(MYP). The MYP provides the best pathway for the IBDP for high school students. Moreover, the MYP methodology engages students to think critically, approach problems ethically and to value the diversity of the world in which we live.

NIHS was nominated as a Super Global High School Associate School by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) in 2015 and then as a designated school for the "Project to Promote High School Education Reform in Collaboration with Local Communities(Glocal Type)" in 2019 as a school that practices education to develop global leaders.

In September 2022, NUCB International Junior and Senior High School became a member of the Council of International Schools(CIS). NIHS embraces CIS's four drivers of purpose and direction, high quality student learning, wellbeing and global citizenship.Formed in 1949, CIS has over 1,360 institutional members in 122 countries.

In 2022, NIHS was selected by MEXT as a project base school in the WWL(World Wide Learning) consortium establishment support project under the theme of "The Greater Nagoya Project for High School Students to Accelerate Regional Development in the New Normal Era."

NIHS is developing curriculum for this project for connecting global hub cities and the world. This curriculum aims to develop innovative global human resources to live in the New Normal Era, and to collaborate with the local community, businesses and industries to identify local issues, create solutions and put them into practice. In this project, students will develop their own research themes and acquire a high level of specialized knowledge and problem-solving skills. In addition, students will participate in the virtual space(i.e. "Meta-School") to engage in constructive discussions on practical activities in each region and country, and thereby creating a place where they can learn, exchange ideas and benefit from a variety of learning experiences. NIHS is working towards creating ideal learning environments for students to acquire the entrepreneurial skills needed to support this innovation creativity.

The International Conference for High School Students will be held in Aichi Prefecture, Japan to create opportunities for students and teachers to discuss a variety of issues, exchange ideas and share their experiences. In addition, the WWL Dialogue Session(ConnectEd) will be held to promote the aims of this project and raise awareness of its benefits to the general public through exchanges and interactions with the general participants.

Nearly all graduating students proceed to higher education. The largest block of students advances to Nagoya University of Commerce and Business(NUCB). In addition, students in recent years have won admission to many prestigious Super Global Universities in Japan, including Nagoya University, Tokyo University of the Arts, Akita International University, Keio University, Waseda University, Sophia University, Hosei University, Kwansei Gakuin University, Ritsumeikan University, International Christian University, and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. Increasingly, students are winning admission to prestigious universities overseas.
